Lake Bracciano is one of the largest volcanic lakes in Italy. Its surface of 57.5 square kilometers and depth of up to 165 meters result from ancient volcanic activity. It was formed thousands of years ago, when the Sabatino volcano collapsed, creating a crater that was later filled with water. Due to its volcanic origin, the area around the lake is rich in minerals, and the shores are characterized by darker volcanic sand.

According to some sources, the lake was called Sabatino after the volcano.

What is very interesting is that the Neolithic settlement of La Marmotta was found in the depths of Lake Bracciano, which provides an extraordinary testimony of the early civilization in the area. On this site, which dates back to prehistory, tools, dishes, and weaving tools were discovered, which proves that its former inhabitants were engaged in weaving and processing materials several thousand years ago.

But apart from its historical and archaeological importance, Lake Bracciano attracts nature and adventure lovers. Thanks to its clear water, the lake is perfect for swimming, sailing, and exploring with kayaks, and it is surrounded by walking and cycling paths through the Bracciano-Martignano Natural Park, which allows visitors to see the local flora and fauna.

Motor vehicle traffic on the water is completely prohibited on the lake in order to maintain the purity of the water, which is also an important source of drinking water for Rome.

The settlements of Anguillara Sabazia and Trevignano Romano, as well as the medieval town of Bracciano, were built near the lake, which also complement the tourist offer. It is in the town of the same name that there are various historical sights, but its biggest attraction is the Orsini-Odescalchi castle from the 15th century.

This enchanting castle is known for its spectacular view of the lake and the surrounding area, it has witnessed many conflicts of noble families, but also one of the more famous modern weddings, that of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. In addition to the castle, you can visit and explore old churches, a museum, narrow streets and small shops.
