One of the most popular destinations in Albania! Gjirokastër is the city of museums and cobblestones
Gjirokastër (Gjirokastra or Gjinokastër) is a city in southern Albania with a population of 43,000, which has a large Greek community and is also known for being the hometown of communist dictator Enver Hoxha (his house has since been demolished). It is located on the slopes of Mali and Gjerë (Wide Mountain).
This old city is inscribed on the World Heritage List as “a rare example of a well-preserved Ottoman city, built by large landowners”. It is also called the stone town because you guessed it, it has its characteristic local style of old houses with roofs covered with stone slabs, and the roads are paved with cobblestones.

The fortress dominates the city and oversees a strategically important road along the river valley. It is open to visitors and houses a military museum in which confiscated weapons and objects from the era of communist resistance against the German occupation are displayed.

Gjirokastër also has an old bazaar that was originally built in the 17th century but was renovated in the 19th century after a fire. There are more than 20 museums in Gjirokaster, which is why it is called the city of museums, and the Folk Music Festival is held there as well.
Today, Gjirokastër is one of the most popular destinations visited by tourists in the continental part of Albania, specifically for its architecture, historical heritage, and excellent cuisine.
Near you can additionally visit the city of Permet; famous for its city stone, the terminal baths of Benja and Vronomer, the hot springs of Postenani, and admire river Vjosa; one of the last wild rivers in Europe!
