Lake Dobbiaco was formed in ancient times by several rock falls that blocked the flow of the Rienza River, creating a natural barrier and forming the lake. Throughout history, the area around the lake has had strategic importance. In 1939, during Mussolini’s rule, five bunkers were built around the lake as part of the Alpine Wall, a defensive system designed to protect Italy’s borders.

The area around Lake Dobbiaco is rich in diverse flora and fauna. The shores are covered with dense forests, while the wetlands are home to many rare plant species. During the summer, visitors can rent pedal boats or rowboats and explore the lake from the water, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. For those who prefer to relax on the shore, there are picnic areas and several restaurants with terraces overlooking the lake. In winter, the lake transforms into a magical snowy landscape. When the lake surface freezes over, ice skating is possible, and the surrounding trails are ideal for cross-country skiing and winter hiking. There is also a ski resort nearby, offering alpine skiing trails, making the area attractive for winter sports enthusiasts.
