Kamnik: Where History Meets Adventure in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps

If you just take a 30-minute ride north from the capital Ljubljana, you will find yourself in Kamnik, one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. The history of this quiet popular little town dates back to the 11th century and is a hiding spot of medieval castles, shepherding traditions, and adventurous opportunities.

Since the beginning, Kamnik has been of huge significance for Slovenia. It used to be an important trade and transportation center, well known for its craftsmanship, and today is a hot spot for history, nature, and relaxation lovers.  In just a few minutes you can find yourself in the town’s historic center surrounded by well-preserved medieval churches and castles, a shepherd’s village on Big Pasture Plateau, an arboretum, or swimming at Terme Snovik spa. MALI GRAD (Little Castle) 

One of the biggest attractions in Kamnik is definitely Little Castle. This medieval fortress, also locally known as Mali Grad, also dates back to the 11th century and it was used for defensive purposes. Today, Little Castle is a museum and cultural center, showcasing exhibitions and displays on the town’s history, the castle’s evolution, and the local culture.

ZAPRICE MANOR

Another very popular attraction in Kamnik is the Zaprice ManorThis beautiful house once was home to a noble family and today is a Kamnik Museum where you can see all kinds of artifacts, artworks, and historical exhibits of the whole Kamnik region.

Franciscan Monastery and Church of St. James

Built in 1492, the Franciscan monastery and Church of St. James today hide all kinds of artifacts, paintings, and a library. With its long history, it is a sanctuary for all kinds of stories of this region y that you need to check out. If you want to pay them a visit, make sure to schedule an appointment.

Kamnik Bistrica

If you love hiking and spending time in nature then make sure you also visit Kamnik Bistrica. This charming river is surrounded by picturesque views and breathtaking nature. It is also known to be one of the cleanest rivers in Slovenia. Near it, you can also find a hunting lodge of King Alexander, gorges of Veliki and Mali Predaselj, and Orglice waterfall.

Volčji Potok Arboretum

Volčji Potok Arboretum is a cultural monument and one of the most important gardens in Slovenia. With its historical significance and beauty, it attracts many visitors who wish to see over 5,000 tree and plant species. The area is perfect for families as it has a playground and anyone who wishes to spend a day surrounded by butterflies and all kinds of flowers.
