Underrated places in Slovenia: Kobarid
A small town in the western part of Slovenia nestled among the Julian Alps. And that town is Kobarid. With its rich history, settling in Upper Soča Valley is a perfect escape near the border with Italy.
Kobarid is not as popular and it is considered an underrated place to visit in Slovenia, however, it shouldn’t be! Here is why!
RICH HISTORY
Kobarid historical background dates all the way to prehistoric times, although it was most uninhabited, significant events started occurring during World War I. The area was a battleground during the Isonzo Front, battles fought between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies. The most notable battle was the Battle of Caporetto which took place in late 1917. Today, visitors can visit those sites and find out more about the daily lives of soldiers and civilians during that time at the Kobarid Museum.
ACTIVITIES
Being located on the Soča River, Kabarid offers opportunities for activities like kayaking, rafting, and fishing. Besides that, if you like hiking and trekking then Julian Alps provides several trails leading to panoramic viewpoints and waterfalls.

THINGS TO SEE in Kobarid
Italian Charnel House
The Italian Charnel house, also known as the Italian ossuary above Kobarid, is a monument to the Italian soldiers who were killed during World War I. It was built next to the Church of St. Anthony.
Kobarid Museum
Kobarid Museum, as we mentioned, holds the materials related to the Isonzo Front. You can view soldiers’ stories, photos, objects, personal belongings, and many other things here.
Waterfall Kozjak
In just under 5 minutes (2km) from Kobarid, you can check out the beautiful Waterfall Kozjak. This 15-metre-high waterfall is a protected natural treasure that you must check out.

Tonovec Castle
Located 412 meters above sea level, Tonovec Castle dates back to the 3rd century AD, when this location was used as a refuge.
Napoleon’s Bridge
Napoleon’s bridge, located near Kobarid, is a bridge that holds two monuments, one dedicated to the World war I. and the other to the World war II. It was made during Napoleon’s time in 1750.
