Stone dolls have inspired imagination and attracted attention for centuries!

The Stone dolls (Mac. Kameni kukli) in North Macedonia are fascinating geological formations located near the village of Kuklica, in the northeast of the country, about 80 kilometers from Skopje.

These formations are also known as “Kuklica stones” or “Stone Weddings” and represent unique natural pillars of various shapes and sizes, which look like people or animals.

The Stone dolls were created naturally through a long-term process of erosion and weathering, which shaped the volcanic rocks. The process lasted several million years and resulted in the creation of around 140 stone figures of different shapes and sizes.

There is a tradition or legend about the origin of stone dolls, which is connected with the wedding and the unhappy love of a guy with two girls from that region. The legend says that there lived a guy in the village who was a great master mason, but also a liar and a lover. The girl was endlessly in love with him, but he married another, because of which the disappointed girl cursed the newlyweds. The moment the newlyweds kissed, the curse came true and all the wedding guests were petrified.

In another version of the legend, it is said that the guy arranged a wedding for both girls on the same day, and when the poorer of the two found out about it, she cursed the groom and the wedding party to turn to stone.

The stone dolls are worth a visit for several reasons:
