From a medieval fortress to a luxurious retreat! Mokrice Castle is a true pearl of Posavje!

Slovenia is full of historic castles, and Posavje, the region along the Sava River, is home to some of the most impressive. Among them are Brežice, Sevnica, Rajhenburg, Podsreda, and Bizeljsko, but one name stands out in particular – Mokrice Castle. Situated on a picturesque hill, close to the Slovenian-Croatian border, it has served as a fortress, aristocratic residence, and economic center for centuries.

Mokrice Castle was first mentioned in written documents in 1444, but it is believed that the site was inhabited even earlier, even in Roman times. Its elevated position allowed it to control important traffic routes, making it strategically important during the Middle Ages. During the Ottoman invasions, it was an important defensive stronghold.

During the 15th and 16th centuries, Ottoman forces frequently attacked these areas, and Mokrice was a target due to its strategic location. The castle suffered several destructions, and its inhabitants and noble owners had to invest significant funds in repairs and strengthening the fortifications. Legend has it that the defensive walls were additionally fortified after a major attack in which the Ottomans tried to break through the main gate. Still, the defenders managed to repel them thanks to tactical superiority and a more favorable position.

In the 16th century, the castle was remodeled in the Renaissance style, and in later centuries it acquired Baroque elements. In the 19th century, it became a luxurious aristocratic residence, and its last noble owners, the von Gagern family, had to sell it due to financial difficulties just before World War II.

The castle has changed owners throughout history and undergone numerous renovations. Its durability testifies to its rich past, and the legends surrounding it further enhance its mysticism. One of the most famous stories is related to a crow that, according to legend, saved the castle from a Turkish siege. Namely, the residents noticed a wounded bird with an arrow in its neck falling into the courtyard, which warned them of the impending danger and enabled them to defend themselves in time. This crow has remained a symbol of the castle and is often mentioned in stories about Mokrice.
