The beautiful medieval Podsreda castle is a place made for romance and adventure this spring
Near the border with Croatia, within the Kozjansko Regional Park, one of Slovenia’s oldest and largest protected areas, a beautiful medieval castle situated itself on the northern slope of Orlica. Approximately 5 kilometers from Podsreda or a scenic 30-minute walk along a hiking trail, you’ll discover Podsreda Castle, a significant Romanesque structure that holds a prominent place in Slovenia’s architectural and cultural heritage.
First mentioned and called Hörberg or Herberch, which translates to “shelter” or “sanctuary,” Podsreda Castle has roots tracing back to the 12th century. Over the centuries, it underwent various construction phases and changed ownership among distinguished individuals.
Its original rectangular layout saw expansions, including the addition of a northern wing around 1150, a robust defensive tower in 1180, the southern wing in 1220, and the tower with the chapel in 1260.
Today, with its romantic setting, Podsreda Castle transcends its historical significance. It has evolved into a destination for those seeking escape, adventure, and cultural experiences. Along the castle, for those who enjoy hiking and exploring nature, you will find the Podsreda Castle Trail. The trail starts at the administrative office of the Kozjansko Regional Park in the town of Podsreda and will lead you through the medieval Podsreda Square, Levstik Mill on the Bistrica River, through the forest and up to the Podsreda Castle. The trail is around 2.5 kilometers long, suitable for both adults and children, and by experiencing it, you will enjoy the peaceful environment, and get to learn more about the biodiversity of this region.
The entrance fee to the castle is 7€ for adults, 4€ for students, and 5€ for seniors. If you are looking for family packages, those are also available too. For a family of three ( 2 adults +1 child), the price is 15€, and for a family of four ( 2 adults + 2 children) is 18€.
Note*: The castle will be closed in January due to preparations for new exciting projects.
