Another castle of the powerful Ali Pasha Telepena! It is located in the Butrint National Park!

Ali Pasha Tepelena, known as the “Lion of Janjina”, was one of the most powerful and influential Ottoman rulers of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Tepelena in southern Albania, Ali Pasha built an impressive political and military career, becoming the de facto autonomous ruler of much of Epirus and the surrounding areas. His ambition and strategic vision were reflected in the numerous fortresses he had built or rebuilt, thus securing control over key points of his territory.

One such fortress is located in his hometown of Tepelenë, which testifies to his intention to protect and consolidate his rule in his native land. In addition, on the coast of the Ionian Sea, in the bay of Porto Palermo, he had an imposing castle built that served as his residence and naval base. Among its many fortifications, the castle located within the Butrint National Park, not far from Ksamil, stands out. This fortress, known as Ali Pasha’s Castle, has a rich and interesting history. It was originally built as a fortified farm by a family from Corfu in the late 17th or early 18th century. In 1804, Ali Pasha took control of the area and immediately began strengthening and upgrading the existing structure, adding cannon batteries and other defensive elements. Given its size, the castle probably served to control the sea access to Butrint, thus ensuring control over sea routes and trade.

The castle is located on a small island at the mouth of the Vivari Canal, a natural passage connecting Lake Butrint with the Ionian Sea. The castle’s structure includes three towers and a central courtyard, with thick stone walls that provided protection from attacks from the sea.

This strategic location allowed him to control maritime traffic in the region. However, after his death in 1822, the castle gradually lost its military importance and was eventually abandoned.
