Lake Ohrid, recognized by UNESCO as both a natural and cultural World Heritage Site, spans approximately 358 square kilometers, with one-third of its surface in Albania and two-thirds in North Macedonia. With an average depth of 155 meters and a maximum depth nearing 290 meters, it is among the deepest lakes in Europe. But even more fascinating is its age… Considered one of the oldest lakes in the world, it has developed a unique ecosystem over millions of years in isolation. Home to over 200 endemic species of fish and microorganisms, the lake serves as a true living laboratory of nature.

Ohrid – the Macedonian gem

The Macedonian shore is dominated by the city of Ohrid, where cobblestone streets preserve the traces of empires, saints, and poets. Once home to 365 churches – one for every day of the year – Ohrid today stands as a symbol of spirituality, architecture, and Old Slavic literacy. Among its most impressive landmarks are:

• The Church of St. John at Kaneo, perched dramatically on a cliff above the lake, offers one of the most photographed views in the Balkans.

Pogradec – the Albanian view of the same lake

On the Albanian side, the town of Pogradec offers a completely different, yet equally enchanting experience of Lake Ohrid. This is a place of summer liveliness, where locals and tourists gather on pebble beaches, and lakeside restaurants serve fresh Ohrid trout – an endemic fish found nowhere else in the world. Pogradec is also a cradle of literary heritage, immortalized in the verses of Albanian poet Lasgush Poradeci, who drew inspiration from the lake’s beauty.

Not to be missed is Drilon, a green oasis just outside the town, where freshwater springs form gentle channels, small bridges, and a labyrinth of waterways. Once the summer retreat of Enver Hoxha, it is now a peaceful park, perfect for walks and boat rides.
