Remains of Mandušić Vuk’s tower
The Tower of Vuk Mandušić is located on the top of a hill in Zečevo near Kistanje, in the heart of the Dalmatian hinterland. This medieval fortress, built in the 17th century, bears witness to the turbulent history of this region, where battles were fought against the Ottoman Empire.
Although there are no detailed records about this tower, it is known that it was built as one of a series of anti-Venetian towers for the defense of the Croatian-Hungarian Kingdom, and later, in the first half of the 16th century, it took on the role of an anti-Ottoman stronghold. According to folklore, on July 31, 1648, the famous hajduk leader Vuk Mandušić was killed here.

Vuk Mandušić, born in Rupa near Skradin at the beginning of the 17th century, was the leader of the Vlachs of Šibenik, also known as Morlachs, who fought against the Ottoman Empire during the Cretan War, which lasted from 1645 to 1669.
His fighting skills and bravery made him a legend, and his name became a symbol of the struggle for freedom. His death in battle near Zečevo is described by Petar II Petrović Njegoš in his work The Mountain Wreath, where he wrote: “In the hands of Vuk Mandušić, every rifle becomes lethal.”
Today, the Tower of Vuk Mandušić represents not only an architectural heritage but also a symbol of resistance and heroism. Unfortunately, the tower is slowly deteriorating because no conservation work has been carried out on it.
Although the village of Zečevo is today almost abandoned, with only a few permanent residents, the tower remains a witness to the rich history and tradition of this region, well worth the climb and the view of the surrounding landscape.
