The answer is impressive. Rome is home to more than 2,000 fountains, making it the city with the highest number of fountains in the world. Among them are around fifty monumental fountains considered true works of art, while the rest consist of smaller decorative and public fountains that have provided drinking water to residents and visitors for centuries.

The history of Rome’s fountains is closely linked to its ancient aqueducts. The Romans developed one of the most advanced water supply systems of the ancient world. By the end of the first century, Rome had nine aqueducts supplying dozens of large fountains and hundreds of public basins.

During the Renaissance and Baroque periods, popes restored old aqueducts and commissioned new fountains to demonstrate the city’s power and provide water for its growing population. It was during this time that some of Rome’s most famous architectural masterpieces were created, including the iconic Trevi Fountain, the largest Baroque fountain in the city, and one of the most famous fountains in the world.

A special category consists of the so-called “nasone”, small public drinking fountains that can be found throughout the city. There are around 2,500 of these fountains alone, and they provide fresh spring water every day, free of charge, for both residents and tourists during the hot summer months.

Because of all this, Rome is not only a city of churches, ancient monuments, and museums. It is also a city of water. From monumental Baroque masterpieces to simple street fountains, these water features have shaped daily life for centuries.
