Galešnjak, the heart-shaped island that impressed the world

When viewed from the air, the sea passage between Pašman and the mainland near Turanj reveals a scene that looks almost unreal. In the middle of the sea lies a perfectly shaped heart. This small uninhabited island has become one of Croatia’s most famous islands thanks to its unusual shape.

Although Croatia has more than a thousand islands, reefs, and islets, few have attracted as much attention as Galešnjak. Its shape was known only to local people and fishermen for decades, but true global fame came only at the beginning of the 21st century, when satellite images became available to everyone. The moment it appeared on digital maps, people around the world were amazed by its almost perfect heart outline. Soon, foreign media began writing about it, and photographs of the island started circulating online.

Galešnjak is located in the Pašman Channel, not far from Turanj and Sveti Filip i Jakov. It covers just under 15 hectares and is about 500 metres long. There are no inhabitants, houses, or tourist facilities on the island. It is precisely this complete lack of development that gives it its special appeal. While many other islands are crowded with tourists during the summer, Galešnjak still looks almost exactly as it did centuries ago.

Although today it is often called the Island of Love or the Island of Lovers, it was not created because of romance or modern stories. Its shape is the result of natural processes that shaped the coastline and seabed over thousands of years. Interestingly, the island had already been marked on maps in the 19th century. Austrian cartographers recorded its unusual shape as early as 1884, but at the time, nobody could have imagined that it would one day become a global sensation.

Galešnjak attracted the greatest attention after it began to be visited by famous couples, millionaires, and world celebrities. There were stories that many celebrities wanted to rent it for private gatherings, and for a time, there was even speculation that a famous Hollywood couple might spend a holiday there. Although many of these stories remained little more than rumours, they further increased interest in this tiny piece of land in the middle of the sea.

Today, Galešnjak is usually reached by boat from Turanj, Biograd na Moru or Sveti Filip i Jakov. Since there is no dock on the island, visitors usually arrive by small boats and anchor near the shore. The sea around the island is exceptionally clear and transparent, making it especially attractive to lovers of swimming, diving, and photography. The best view, however, is not from the shore but from above. Only when you see it from a plane, a drone, or the surrounding hills does it become clear just how incredible its shape really is.

Despite its great popularity, Galešnjak still has no developed tourist infrastructure. There are no restaurants, beaches, cafés, or apartments on the island. For some people, this is precisely its greatest value. Instead of hotels and loud music, you will find silence, the scent of the sea, the sound of cicadas, and the feeling that you have escaped from the rest of the world.

In recent years, ideas have occasionally appeared about turning it into an exclusive destination for weddings, private parties, or luxury tourism. However, such ideas often provoke debate. Many believe that the island should be preserved exactly as it is, without major buildings or interventions that would damage its uniqueness. Galešnjak is not interesting because there is something on it, but precisely because it has remained almost untouched.

Several other islands around the world resemble a heart, but none is as perfectly shaped as Galešnjak. For that reason, it is often described as the most beautiful heart-shaped island in the world. Some even call it the most romantic place on the Adriatic. Whatever the case, this small island in the Pašman Channel has been winning hearts around the world for years.
