Mussel! Queen of Lake Butrint

Ahmed Pasha, known as Ahmad Pasha al-Jazzar, was a prominent Ottoman governor, known as a military leader who defeated and stopped Napoleon Bonaparte, the emperor of one of the greatest military powers in the history of the world.

This very “Turkish Napoleon” visited Lake Butrint, in the south of Albania, every year in the summer, to meet the queen of the lake and enjoy the beauty that this area has to offer.

The mussel is the real “queen” here. She gave health and prosperity to Ali Pasha, says the legend, which proves how important the mussel was and still is.

Usually, the tour around the lake starts with a ride on a traditional transport, a wooden boat used by natives, who will guide you across the lake and tell you the many legends of this area.

During this trip, you will also see how mussels are cultivated and grown, and after that, the hosts will get fresh mussels and then take you to one of the quiet beaches with a fantastic view of the whole area to enjoy its flavors.
