Sarajevo’s old bazaar: Bascarsija

Bascarsija, located in the heart of Sarajevo, is a very famous historic and cultural neighborhood of big significance to both the city and the country. Derived from the Turkish words “baş,” meaning “head,” and “çarşı,” meaning “market,” in translation means the “main market”.

 

Sarajevo’s old bazaar was established by the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century during their rule over the region. At that time, Bascarsija served as a commercial and cultural center and played a vital role in its development, and even today it remains the same attracting tourists from all over the world.

The Sebilj Fountain, at the center of Bascarsija, serves as the symbol. It was built a bit later, somewhere in the 18th century and today serves as a great meeting spot.

Besides the Sebilj Fountain, notable landmarks include the Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque, one of the largest and most important mosques in Bosnia and Herzegovina,  Old Orthodox Church,  and Morica Han, an only Ottoman-era caravanserai.

Surrounding the fountain and all over Bascarscija you’ll find numerous small shops, cafes, and restaurants, offering a variety of traditional Bosnian crafts, souvenirs, and delicious local cuisine.
