Why is the Savina Monastery an essential stop in Herceg Novi?

Once, while we were writing about Herceg Novi and about what to see there, we mentioned the monastery that appears on the slope above Meljine as a historical constant of the town. At that time it was only briefly noted among many attractions, but if you want to understand the development of Herceg Novi and the Bay of Kotor region, the Savina Monastery can hardly remain on the margins. Its story stretches through centuries, carrying layers of political struggles, cultural influences and the Orthodox tradition that took shape here and endured despite historical changes.

The Savina Monastery is located on a gentle elevation, surrounded by cypresses that emphasise its presence from afar. The complex consists of three churches, and the oldest among them is the small Church of the Holy Virgin. According to some sources, it may date back to the eleventh or twelfth century, while others state that the first confirmed written records appear only in the seventeenth century. Because of this, it is often said that its real origin is older than the earliest document that mentions it.

The large Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God from the eighteenth century is the most prominent part of the complex. According to most sources, it is a Baroque structure built by masters from the local Boka building tradition. In some literature the name Nikola Foretic appears as a possible architect or project leader, although this is not universally confirmed. The iconostasis is attributed to Boka masters, but according to some sources it may also be connected to workshops from across the Adriatic, which remains open to interpretation.

The third church, dedicated to Saint Sava, appears in sources as a building added later, although the exact time of construction varies depending on the author. According to one group of historians it was created in the eighteenth century, while others believe it may be somewhat younger.

The treasury of the Savina Monastery is one of its most notable features. According to some sources, parts of the valuables from the monasteries of Tvrdos and Hilandar were brought to Savina when monks fled from Ottoman incursions. Other sources note that it is not entirely certain whether all items arrived at once or were gradually collected over a longer period. What is certain is that the treasury contains manuscripts, icons, vestments and items of great cultural significance, including several connected to the tradition of the Nemanjic dynasty.

Throughout the centuries the monastery held the role of an important spiritual and cultural centre. According to some historical notes, books were copied and manuscripts preserved here, while other sources attribute that activity to later periods. What historians generally agree on is that Savina played a significant role in Orthodox life in the Bay of Kotor during Venetian, Ottoman and Austrian rule.

Today the Savina Monastery is considered one of the most recognisable cultural and historical sites of Herceg Novi. Visitors come for its history, architecture and the tradition it represents. According to many sources, Savina is a place that offers the broadest insight into the development of Orthodoxy in the Bay of Kotor, although some details of its past are still interpreted through fragments and comparisons.

If you plan to explore Herceg Novi, Savina is not just an additional stop. It is one of the key historical landmarks that explains how this town was created, how it developed, and how it shaped its distinctive cultural identity.
