Villa Velebita – restaurant with fine lamb on the state road

Intended travelers who use the state road from Karlovac across the Plitvice Lakes towards the sea know very well that along the way, there are several restaurants with traditional dishes, including lamb on a spit.

That’s how the road took me on these sunny and warm autumn Sundays from the opposite direction, from the sea towards Zagreb. Back in Split, the decision was made that we would eat lamb on a spit in one of the restaurants between Gračac and Plitvice Lakes, and the last border for lunch was Slunj.

However, it was not an easy task because I visited as many as four restaurants before I found what I wanted in the fifth. You already know the old habit of drivers to only go to restaurants where a lot of vehicles are parked in front because that is a “guarantee” that the food is good there. That’s how I arrived in front of Vila Velebita, right after Korenica, in a place called Rudanovac.

The lamb with potatoes and onions quickly arrived at our table, it was beautifully sliced, and for the first time, I experienced a helpful waiter asking me which parts of the lamb I wanted. Not only that, but the pieces of meat were also with minimal amounts of bones. For the first time in my life, my wife and I could not finish a kilogram of lamb, but three pieces of meat were left.

The lamb was tasty and fresh, although it felt that it was not served directly from the spit.

This summer I tried lamb in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Croatia, and I didn’t notice any difference in taste. They were all excellent. The only difference was the price. I paid 25 euros per kilogram in Banja Luka, 33 euros in Radanovići near Tivat, and 58 euros in Vila Velebita.
