Kruje Castle and Skanderbeg Museum
Did you know that the city of Krujë (Kruja) used to be one of the most important cities in Albania? It was once the capital of the first Albanian state in the middle ages and then the capital of the Kingdom of Albania. Today it holds great historical importance and is one of the most visited places in the country.

So why is it that? Well, besides the Illyrian tribes that used to live there, somewhere in the 15th century, a national hero Gjergj Kastrioti, called Skanderbeg, defeated the Ottoman Empire, and kept them away from Albania until his death.
The castle itself was his “throne”, and today it is a Skanderbeg Museum which holds the story behind the bravery and defense, and showcases the life and achievements of Skanderbeg.

Visitors of Kruja Castle can explore the various sections of the castle, including the watchtowers, battlements, and the Skanderbeg Museum, which displays artifacts, weapons, and documents related to the hero and the historical period he lived in.
Apart from its historical and cultural significance, the castle also has a breathtaking panoramic view and provides visitors with a glimpse into Albania’s past and the valiant efforts of its national hero to protect the country’s independence.
