Firstly ruled by the Frankopan family, it consisted of a fortress with a circular defensive tower and high walls. Within the walls of the castle residential buildings, warehouses, cellars, and a water cistern could be found. Much later, when the Zrinski family joined a Church of St Stephen was added, and the road between Novi Vinodolski and Bakar was built.

The road enabled inhabitants to move to the valley where the village of Drivenik was developed. In addition to the  Church of St Stephen a Church of St Domnius was built.

After the Zrinski-Frankopan Conspiracy, the castle came under the command of Vienna and completely lost its value and population.

Today, this beautiful Drivenik castle remains on the top of the hill, in great condition, and surrounded by dense forest, making it a perfect place for a gateway from the hustle and bustle of the surrounding cities and large crowds in summer days.

In autumn, when the forest changes color, it becomes the most picturesque place in the area.
