Isola del Liri is adorned with two waterfalls in the very center of the town.

In central Italy, in the green region of Lazio, there is a town whose identity has always been tied to water. Isola del Liri lies on an island created by the division of the river of the same name, and that moment when the current split shaped everything you see today in its old streets, on its bridges, and in the calm rhythm of daily life. The town grew around the water that not only flows through its center but also cascades directly through the historic core, making Isola del Liri one of the most unusual urban landscapes in Italy.

The Liri River rises in the area of Monte Camiciola and the Simbruini mountain range in central Italy. After flowing for more than 120 kilometers through Lazio and passing towns such as Sora, it reaches Isola del Liri, where its course changes character. At the point where a travertine rock interrupts the flow, the river splits into two branches that form a small island and create the foundation of the town’s historic center. On this natural stone threshold stands the Boncompagni Viscogliosi Castle. Here, the waterfall descends, merging river and architecture into a scene that clearly shows why this place is different from any other town.

The best-known waterfall is the Great Waterfall (Cascata Grande), which gives the town its most recognizable appearance. It is about 27 meters high and breaks into a powerful, almost vertical drop that produces the constant sound characteristic of the town center.

On the opposite side lies the Valcatoio Waterfall (Cascata del Valcatoio). Its descent is not completely vertical, as the water flows down a wide rock face following a long slope to the base. This is the other side of the split Liri, and together with the Great Waterfall, it forms a unique whole in the very center of the town.

Walking between the two waterfalls, you pass through the old parts of Isola del Liri, where mills and paper factories once operated. For centuries, the river was a source of power and the driving force behind local industry, and today it remains the source of the town’s distinctive identity, where nature and heritage create a scene that is hard to forget. This is why Isola is not just a town, but a rare place where waterfalls define its appearance and character.
