Here’s why Jablanica Lake delights all passersby!
Driving along the main M17 road between Konjic and Mostar, it is almost impossible not to stop in Jablanica. Some will stop for roasted lamb, since this place earned its reputation as a gastronomic station long ago, while others will pause already at the first views of the mighty Neretva River. But only after the first curve, when you see the wide water surface, you realize that in front of you stretches Jablanica Lake, a blue mirror that unites mountains and river into a landscape to remember.

Jablanica Lake is not natural, although it blends perfectly into the scenery. It was created in 1953 with the construction of a dam on the Neretva, about 5 km upstream from Jablanica. The lake reaches a length of 30 km, with a surface area of about 13 km². Its depth varies, reaching up to 80 m in some places, with water level oscillations of up to 25 m. Despite its artificial origin, everything you see feels pristine, with steep wooded shores, calm bays, protruding peninsulas, and winds that bring refreshment in the summer months.
The surrounding mountains give the lake a special character. On one side descend the slopes of Prenj and Čvrsnica, while on the other rise forested ridges that enclose it like a natural amphitheater. When the sun sets behind the cliffs, the surface of the lake takes on golden tones, while morning mist sometimes wraps the shores, creating a scene like a mountain sea.

For lovers of water activities, Jablanica Lake offers countless possibilities. Swimming, diving, and boat rides are just the beginning, while kayaking and SUP boards are becoming more and more popular. In summer, along its shores, you can find small bathing spots, improvised beaches, and camping places. Anglers face a real challenge here, since the lake is home to trout, marble trout, carp, chub, and many other species. Local fishermen like to say that fishing on the lake is more than a sport; it is a way to connect with the Neretva.
In addition to attracting excursionists and athletes, Jablanica Lake also has economic importance. The dam that created it provides hydroelectric power, while the reservoir regulates the river’s flow. Yet what makes the lake special in the eyes of travelers is not its function, but the sense of tranquility it provides. Driving along its shores, you almost instinctively want to stop, get out of the car, and watch the surface where the clouds are reflected.

Another advantage of the lake is its accessibility. It lies right next to the main road connecting Sarajevo with Mostar and further with the Adriatic coast. This makes it an ideal stop for a break, but also a base for exploring the surrounding natural and cultural attractions. In a single day, you can swim in its waters, hike on Prenj, and in the evening head down to Mostar.
Only when you descend into the town of Jablanica does the story gain another dimension. Here stands the Memorial Bridge on the Neretva, a symbol of the Battle of the Neretva from 1943. Destroyed and rebuilt, the bridge today stands as a national monument, and within the museum, you can learn the story of the Battle for the Wounded, one of the most dramatic episodes of the Second World War in this region. Walking across the bridge and looking at the river, it is easy to feel the weight of history that this area carries.

And it is precisely in Jablanica that everything falls into place. After experiencing the natural beauty of the lake and the past that is guarded by the bridge, it is time to savor what made the town legendary: roasted lamb. Cooked on a spit, fragrant and juicy, it has become a true symbol of the region’s travel experience. If you prefer fish, trout from the Neretva is an equally good choice, prepared simply so that its freshness speaks for itself. Our suggestion is the restaurant Begović, one of the places where you will best understand why Jablanica never leaves anyone hungry.
A visit to Jablanica Lake is not just a trip; it is an experience where natural beauty, historical weight, and gastronomic pleasure come together. Whether you are passing on your way to the sea or exploring the interior of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it is worth stopping here. It is only when you sit by the lake shore, look toward the mountains, and smell the roasted lamb, that you realize you have found one of those places that stays in your memory.
