Autumn trip! Visit Virje waterfall, a hidden gem near Bovec
A few kilometers from Bovec, at the foot of the Julian Alps, lies one of the places that is especially worth visiting in autumn, the Virje Waterfall. Located in the village of Plužna, it is easily accessible and transforms into an unforgettable destination for anyone seeking a blend of natural beauty, fresh mountain air, and tranquility. Right now, when the rains fill the mountain streams, the waterfall shows its full strength, and the scene becomes more impressive than at any other time of the year.

The Virje Waterfall is fed by the Gljun stream, a mountain watercourse that springs above Plužna. It winds its way through the forested landscape, shaping small pools and channels, before plunging 12 meters down the rocks to create an emerald pool at the foot of the waterfall. Its width, which reaches up to 20 meters, gives it an imposing appearance, and when combined with the green color of the pool and the colorful treetops surrounding it in autumn, it is clear why visitors are left enchanted. After leaving Virje, the Gljun continues through the valley and eventually flows into the Soča River, connecting with one of the most famous rivers in the entire region.
At the foot of the waterfall lies Lake Plužna, a reservoir lake that serves the needs of a hydroelectric plant while also adding a special aesthetic value to the area. Its surface often reflects the surrounding mountains and forests, so in autumn it looks like a painted canvas. While the waterfall displays its power, the lake offers the opposite: calmness and silence.

The village of Plužna, in whose surroundings the waterfall is located, is a typical Alpine settlement with wooden houses, small farms, and views that end on mountain peaks. Although small and quiet, it carries a special charm and offers a sense of authenticity. It is an excellent starting point for exploring the area, whether you plan a short walk to the Virje Waterfall or a tour of the surrounding natural attractions.
A practical advantage for visitors is the fact that there is a designated parking area near the waterfall. From there, a short and accessible trail leads you within minutes to a scene that feels almost unreal. Autumn here is a time of peace, as there are no summer crowds, nature shows its most lavish colors, and the waterfall, thanks to the abundance of water, becomes even stronger and more impressive.

If you decide to take a trip to this area, it is impossible not to mention Bovec. Only a few minutes by car separate Plužna from this lively town, which is today known as a center of adrenaline sports and for exploring the Soča Valley. But Bovec will be the subject of one of the upcoming articles, as it deserves a story of its own.
It is also worth mentioning another natural wonder nearby. Just 18 minutes by car from Plužna lies the Boka Waterfall, the largest waterfall in Slovenia. Its height and power are breathtaking, and when you combine it with a visit to Virje on the same trip, you will have a day filled with sights that remain deeply etched in memory.
