Koćuša Waterfall is an ideal destination for a nature escape

Bosnia and Herzegovina is rich in natural beauty, and among them, there are numerous waterfalls that attract visitors from all over the world. Those such as Kravica, Štrbački buk, and Pliva Waterfall are known for their impressive beauty and unique setting, but among these natural gems is the lesser-known but equally enchanting Koćuša waterfall, which is a perfect destination for a trip, especially in the warmer months.

This waterfall is located in the village of Veljaci, in the municipality of Ljubuški, in the western part of Herzegovina, and is an easily accessible destination from the larger cities in the region. For example, from Mostar, which is about 50 kilometers away, it takes about an hour by car, while for visitors from Croatia, for example from Split, the drive takes about two and a half hours via the Bijača border crossing.

Koćuša is a waterfall that was created on the Mlada River, a tributary of the Trebižat River. The height of the waterfall is about 5 meters, but what makes this waterfall special is its impressive 50-meter width and continuous flow of water that creates a picturesque scene. Travertine rocks, which are the result of deposition over the centuries, shape the unique structure of the waterfall, creating a natural amphitheater. In the immediate vicinity of the waterfall, there are also old mills and stupas, which testify to the traditional way of life and the use of water energy in the past.

The area around the waterfall is rich in diverse flora and fauna. The banks of the river are covered with lush vegetation, including willows, poplars, and various types of shrubs. It is precisely such vegetation that provides a habitat for many species of birds, such as kingfishers, herons, and ducks. In addition, various species of fish can be found in the river water, which makes this area interesting for fishermen.

Koćuša waterfall is an ideal destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway. Visitors can enjoy a picnic with the sounds of the waterfall, walk along the riverbank or simply relax in the natural surroundings. Given the crystal clear water, swimming is also possible during the warmer months, although caution should be exercised due to strong currents near the waterfall. There are several restaurants nearby that offer traditional Herzegovinian cuisine, so you can try something authentic.

With the arrival of spring, the waterfall becomes even more attractive. Increased rainfall and melting snow in the mountains lead to a greater flow of water, which makes the waterfall more powerful and spectacular, and the surrounding nature, which flourishes and blooms in various shades of green, makes this place ideal for a visit.

Visitors who want to further enrich their trip can explore other attractions in the Ljubuški area. The Kravica Waterfall, often called the “Niagara of Herzegovina”, is just a few kilometers away and offers an impressive sight with a height of 25 meters and a width of 120 meters. The 15th-century Herceg Stjepan Fortress offers historical insight and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, while the Humac Museum, the oldest museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina, houses a rich archaeological collection and provides an insight into the cultural heritage of the region.
