Kotli, waterfalls, and Mirna? The Seven Waterfalls Trail is a real autumn hit for a weekend trip
If you are looking for an autumn trip that combines light adventure, natural beauty, and the authentic Istrian landscape, the Trail of Seven Waterfalls near Buzet is one of the best options you can choose. This popular circular route follows the Mirna River and its tributaries, passing through forests, canyons, and small villages, connecting seven waterfalls that return to full flow in autumn.

The trail begins and ends near the old Buzet brewery. It is about 15 kilometers long, and completing the entire route takes between 4 and 6 hours, depending on your pace. The terrain is mostly easy to moderately demanding, with a few steeper sections that require attention and good footwear. It is best to hike counterclockwise, as the more demanding parts come at the start when you still have plenty of energy.
Along the way, you will encounter a variety of landscapes from forest paths along the riverbanks to stone crossings and old bridges. The first waterfall, Zagon, is about 5 meters high, while the second, Bačva, reaches almost 9. The third, Vela Peć, is the highest on the route at 26 meters and also the most impressive. After that comes a short ascent secured with cables and metal steps, the only technically challenging part of the path. The next is the smaller but charming Mala Peć, followed by the most famous one, Kotli.

The village of Kotli is the symbol of the trail and one of the most photographed spots in inland Istria. Here, the Kotli waterfall drops 12 meters into natural stone pools, surrounded by traditional stone houses and remnants of old mills. Many hikers take a longer break here for rest or lunch before continuing towards the Zelenšćak and Grjok waterfalls, which complete the loop before returning to Buzet.
Autumn is the ideal season for this hike. The water levels are high, the waterfalls are full, and the temperatures are pleasant for walking. In summer, many sections may dry up, changing the overall impression. Because of the combination of water, stone passages, and forest terrain, sturdy shoes with good grip are essential, along with at least 1.5 liters of water per person.

The Trail of Seven Waterfalls is not only the most famous hiking route in Istria but also one of the few places where you can experience nearly the entire landscape of inland Istria within a relatively short distance. Rivers, waterfalls, bridges, forests, and stone scenery make it a perfect choice for a day trip, especially in autumn when nature here looks its best.
