Between the peaks of Cristallo and Monte Piana lies the magical Lake Landro!

On the road between Toblach and Lake Misurina, in the Val di Landro valley, lies one of the most peaceful mountain lakes in the Dolomites. Lake Landro, also known locally as Dürrensee, captivates with its simplicity and presence that instantly makes you stop. Surrounded by dense forests and towering peaks, its shores open to a breathtaking view of the Cristallo mountain group and the impressive Monte Piana.

It sits at an altitude of about 1,400 meters, between two protected areas, Tre Cime di Lavaredo Nature Park and Fanes Sennes Braies Nature Park. The lake covers an area of around 14 hectares, with a maximum depth of 3.5 meters. Because of its shallow waters that recede and refill throughout the year, the lake was given its German name Dürrensee, meaning “dry lake”.

A walking path about 3 kilometers long circles the lake, perfect for a stroll or photography. Those looking for more adventure can head toward Monte Piana or continue to the famous peaks of Tre Cime di Lavaredo. Nature lovers will find migratory birds passing overhead, while trout and other cold-water fish inhabit the lake itself. The surrounding forests are home to deer, squirrels, and other wildlife often seen in the early morning hours.

On the shore, there is a small restaurant with a terrace where you can rest while enjoying the view of the mountains and the lake. During summer, it attracts mostly cyclists and hikers who follow the popular Pustertal route, while autumn brings a slower rhythm. As everywhere in the Dolomites, autumn here paints its own colorful paradise.

Around Landro, autumn looks as if nature decided to show everything it knows. The leaves turn from green to amber, red, and gold, while the mountains above the shore reflect on the water, which takes on a new shade each day. The air is crisp and carries the scent of pine and damp earth. In the mornings, fog settles low over the valley, then slowly lifts to reveal the outlines of the peaks rising above.

The most beautiful moments at Lake Landro come when the surface of the water glows with golden and pink tones, and the mountains seem to burn under the sunlight. The whole landscape becomes a stage, alive and constantly changing, filled with colors no camera can truly capture. Lake Landro may not be the largest or most famous in the Dolomites, but it has something many others lack: a character that makes it worth visiting at least once in a lifetime.

One of Italy’s most picturesque lakes! Lake Braies is simply a must visit!
