Behind the famous waterfalls of the Krka lies Visovac, a small island where history, faith, and nature meet.

At the middle course of the Krka River, within Krka National Park, at the point where the river widens into Visovac Lake, lies Visovac, a small island whose significance has for centuries far exceeded its physical size. Its importance is not based solely on the beauty of its setting, but on the role it played in preserving faith, literacy, and cultural continuity during periods when this part of Dalmatia was exposed to wars, migrations, and political upheavals.

Visovac is first mentioned in historical sources in the 14th century, when the Augustinians arrived on the island and founded a monastery with a church dedicated to Saint Paul the Hermit. The choice of location was deliberate. Although small in size, measuring roughly 170 × 120 meters, the island offered natural protection and clear spatial separation suitable for monastic life, while at the same time remaining connected to its surroundings via the Krka River, then an important transport and communication route.

At the end of the 15th century, during the Ottoman advance into the Dalmatian hinterland, the Augustinians left Visovac, and the monastery was taken over by the Franciscans. With their arrival, Visovac assumed the role of a permanent spiritual and cultural center. In conditions marked by frequent wars and insecurity, the monastery became a place of education, refuge, and continuity, from which the Franciscans operated across large parts of Dalmatia and Bosnia.

The present appearance of the monastic complex developed gradually. During the 16th and 17th centuries, restorations and extensions were carried out, while in the 18th century, the architectural ensemble as it is known today took shape, including the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, the cloister, and the monastic buildings. The architecture is simple and functional, consistent with Franciscan tradition, yet clearly rooted in the period of its creation.

The interior of the monastery preserves exceptionally valuable cultural heritage. The monastic library and museum contain manuscripts, rare printed books, and incunabula, among which a 1487 edition of Aesop’s Fables stands out in particular. The collections also include liturgical objects and records of everyday monastic life, making Visovac an important guardian of the religious and cultural history of this region.

The natural setting of Visovac further emphasizes its uniqueness. The island is surrounded by the emerald waters of Visovac Lake and rich vegetation, with more than 190 recorded plant species. Among the permanent residents of the island are peacocks, which over time have become one of its recognizable symbols and part of everyday life.

Visovac can be reached exclusively by boat, as part of organized excursion routes within Krka National Park. Boats depart from several locations within the park, most commonly from Skradinski Buk and the Roški Slap area, and the journey to island passes through a calmer section of the river and across Visovac Lake.

Time spent on Visovac is limited, but during the visit, you can explore the monastic complex, the Church of Our Lady of Mercy, the cloister, the library, and the museum collections.
