A tradition from 1916 and a burger that surprised us. Is it worth stopping at Oštarija Bolk?

If you find yourself on the regional road between Postojna and Razdrto, it is hard not to notice the building that generations of travelers know well. They say that for years, Bolk Bar operated there, a mandatory stop for a short break and a quick meet-up. Yet behind that address lies a much older story. Today, cooking is done there under the name Oštarija Bolk, but its history began long before the new sign appeared on the facade.

As early as 1916, during the time of Italian rule, an inn operated here, which is said to have been the first in this area. It was not only a place for food and drink, but also a gathering spot, a kind of social hub for the village. It was run by the owner Tončka Turk and her successors, and within those walls the everyday life of the community unfolded.

Although the space now has a new name and fresh energy, the idea remains the same. It is still a house by the road where many choose to stop, and this time, so did we.

Today, it is a restaurant whose kitchen, as we hear, is led by Neža Kobal, a chef who has built discipline and her own culinary signature through several serious professional engagements. On the menu, we found a variety of pizzas and pasta dishes, but the main focus is clearly on grilled meat, from ćevapčiči and pljeskavice to mixed meat platters—a truly rich selection.

After quite a bit of hesitation, because when you have “hungry eyes”, everything on the menu sounds tempting, we decided on the gourmet pljeskavica. It arrived at the table surprisingly quickly, which, at that moment when we were already seriously hungry, was more than welcome.

In some reviews before arriving, we had read that the portions were supposedly no longer what they used to be, but to us, the amount on the plate seemed quite generous and more than enough. So when I asked my colleague how he liked it, he said, “I would give it 11 out of 10!” And I have to say that I truly liked it as well. The meat was nicely seasoned, the flatbread soft and warm, and even now my mouth is watering. Along with the pljeskavica, we ordered sparkling mineral water, a drink, and a coffee to finish.

I must mention that the story from the beginning of this article really does hold. While we were sitting in the restaurant, we noticed a constant flow of guests. As soon as someone left, someone new arrived. It seems to me that we chose well for today’s lunch. Everything looked very neat and visually inviting, with an occasional old photograph accompanied by a story about how people used to gather and have fun here.

As for the prices, it is quite interesting that they are perfectly reasonable. Our pljeskavica was 20 euros per person, and in total we paid 48 euros, including drinks and coffee. It seems perfectly okay to me. As it stands, I will certainly return to this restaurant again.
