Preservation of Heritage: Museum Staro Selo in Kumrovac
In the heart of Hrvatsko Zagorje, right next to the Sutla River and the border with Slovenia lies the small village of Kumrovec. This picturesque place is not only famous for its beautiful nature but also as the birthplace of one of the most famous political figures of the 20th century, Josip Broz Tito.
However, between the past and the present, one special jewel stands out as the guardian of the cultural heritage of this area – the Staro Selo Ethnographic Museum (Old Village Kumrovec), the first and most famous open-air Croatian ethnographic museum.
This unique museum shows the authentic appearance of the Zagorje villages, the way of life of the people, and the customs and crafts that were part of the daily life of an ordinary peasant from this area.
Visitors can visit 40 restored traditional wooden and stone houses from Hrvatsko Zagorje. The unique atmosphere of the museum immediately greets visitors upon entering.
Houses made of typical Zagorje wooden log cabins are spread across the village, creating an impressive illusion of old times. Each of them has been carefully restored and equipped with authentic furniture, tools, and household items, providing a deep insight into the living conditions and customs of past generations.
In addition, the museum also offers various collections, including an art collection, a historical collection, and a collection of children’s toys, and regularly organizes various manifestations and events to revive the tradition and attract visitors from all over the country and the world.
If you are a lover of cultural heritage, the Kumrovec Old Village Museum is worth a visit. Here you will go back in time and feel the spirit of the Zagorje region as it once was.
