The second biggest jewel of Bjelasica! You have to experience Pešića lake with your own eyes!
We have written several times about the natural beauties of Bjelasica and the Biogradska gora National Park. If you read one of those articles, you surely know about the famous Lake Biograd, which is the most famous on this mountain. However, Bjelasica hides five other lakes in its lush embrace, and one of them is a real hidden gem – Lake Pešića.
Lake Pešića is the second largest lake in Bjelasica. It is located at an altitude of about 1,830 meters, between the two highest peaks of the mountain – Crna glava (2139 m) and Zekova glava (2117 m). It is of glacial origin and a true natural gem. Although its surface changes throughout the year, it is on average 290 meters long, 165 meters wide, and 3 to 8 meters deep.
The lake has extremely clean and cold water because it is fed by melting snow from the surrounding mountains and underground springs. The surroundings of the lake are rich in diverse flora and fauna, with hundreds of plant and animal species characteristic of the mountain ecosystem of Bjelasica.
Various stories about the Turks, as well as legends, are connected to the lake. The most interesting of them is about a winged horse that flies over the lake in the moonlight. According to legend, he was worshiped by the fairies who watched him for centuries. The story goes that once a young man, eager to experience this magic, came to the lake and decided to bathe in it. But the fairies drowned him out of jealousy.
If you find yourself near Biogradska gora National Park or planning a visit to Bjelasica, don’t miss the opportunity to explore Lake Pešića, just don’t try to swim in it so the fairies don’t get angry again! 😀
This lake may not be as well known as Biograd Lake, but its beauty and peace provide a unique experience of nature. Bring good shoes, a camera and get ready for an adventure that will reward you with scenes you will never forget.
