Church of St. Thomas is located on a hill in a small settlement of the same name, at a height of 666 meters above sea level. Its picturesque setting adds to its uniqueness. The original church was built in the Romanesque period between the 15th and 16th centuries, while the clergy shows traces of the Gothic. Despite numerous changes, including the baroqueization of the interior and the rebuilding of the bell tower by the Škofje builder Janez Krstnik Molinar in 1860, the church has preserved its historical authenticity and attractiveness.

Unfortunately, in 1945, the church was bombed, which caused significant damage. However, these damages revealed the remains of frescoes from the 14th century, which professor Znoj later restored. Inside the church, you can see five statues – St. Thomas, Mary with Jesus, St. Andrew, St. Matthias, and St. Josh Nepomuk – which further enrich its interior.

In the sacristy, a beautiful baroque carving of the canonical panel has been preserved, while in the nave the fresco of St. Joseph from the 14th century.

One of the characteristic elements of the church is its location. It is located on a low grassy hill, surrounded by only three trees, while in the distance it is adorned by dense rows of pines.

Every visitor can enjoy different scenes of the church throughout the seasons, but autumn is a special time when the church of St. Thomas comes to the fore. Golden-brown shades of autumn leaves, misty mornings covering the church’s surroundings, and the golden glow of the sun create perfect conditions for creating amazing photos.

It is not bad to visit it even in winter!

Photographers often recommend visiting the church early in the morning to capture the best moments, as it is not lit at night and can be difficult to get to. If you also want to capture some of the most wonderful moments of this church, use the magic of autumn to visit it, and while you’re there, explore some of the other beauties that Slovenia has to offer.
