Žabljak is a perfect destination to visit all year round
In the north of Montenegro, far from the coast and main traffic routes, the landscape gradually rises into a mountainous area dominated by open plateaus and high mountain massifs. Žabljak, a mountain town located high on the Durmitor plateau, lies at an altitude that clearly defines its alpine character upon arrival. It is the highest urban center in the country, a place that has developed from its earliest days in direct connection with its natural surroundings. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, Žabljak began to take shape as a mountain resort and climatic spa, a role that remains its main defining feature today.
The town is closely connected to the Durmitor massif and the national park that dominates the entire area. This proximity to the mountains strongly shapes the landscape, the rhythm of daily life, and the way the destination is experienced throughout the year. The seasons have a strong influence on the appearance and perception of the area, and in winter, snow brings a different rhythm and a visually transformed landscape.

One of the most well-known places in the area is Black Lake, a symbol of Žabljak and one of the most recognizable glacial lakes in this part of Europe. Located at the foot of mountain peaks and surrounded by forest, the lake changes its appearance throughout the year while retaining its calm and balanced character. During the warmer months, it attracts walkers and visitors, while in winter, when the surface partially or completely freezes, the landscape takes on a quieter and more enclosed atmosphere.
The wider area of Žabljak is also marked by the Tara River canyon, one of the deepest in Europe. The view from the Đurđevića Tara Bridge offers a clear sense of the canyon’s scale and the river flowing deep below, creating a strong visual impression regardless of the season. This part of the landscape is often highlighted as one of the most striking natural sights in Montenegro.

The winter season in Žabljak is closely associated with the Savin Kuk ski resort, located just above the town. The resort is moderate in size and not overly commercialized, making it accessible and easy to navigate. The ski slopes and lifts are integrated into the natural terrain, and winter also brings a noticeable change to the town itself, which takes on a quieter and more distinctly alpine character.

Beyond lakes, canyons, and ski facilities, the surroundings of Žabljak are rich in plateaus, mountain passes, and viewpoints that offer wide views of the Durmitor landscape. Among them, Ćurevac stands out as a viewpoint above the Tara River canyon, popular among hikers and nature lovers for its open views, peaceful setting, and one of the most impressive panoramic vistas in Montenegro.
Žabljak is a destination that does not offer a single, fixed experience, but changes with the seasons and the way you approach it. Take the first opportunity and visit it.
