Pohorje also has its own vintgar! The Bistrica River reveals a gorge that few people know about
When people hear the word vintgar, most immediately think of the famous Vintgar Gorge near Bled, one of Slovenia’s most visited natural landmarks. But that gorge is not the only one of its kind. Slovenia, a land of rivers and mountain valleys, hides several other gorges worth exploring. One of them lies near the town of Slovenska Bistrica, at the foot of the forested Pohorje hills. This is the Bistriški Vintgar, a gorge carved over centuries by the mountain river Bistrica.

Here, where the valley begins to rise toward the hilly landscape, Bistriški Vintgar reveals its natural beauty. The Bistrica River, clear and cool, flows between rocks and forest, forming a series of small waterfalls and pools. From the very start of the trail, the sound of rushing water fills the air, while thick tree canopies create pleasant shade above. The most famous waterfall here is Šum, dropping thirteen meters down a rocky slope, especially impressive during the spring when the river is at its strongest.

Over thousands of years, the water has sculpted the rocks into fascinating shapes and created small natural basins where the surrounding greenery reflects in the calm surface. Along the path, visitors can still see the remains of old mills, a reminder of the time when the Bistrica powered local life. The trail through Bistriški Vintgar stretches for about six kilometers, following the river upstream to the edge of the mountain foothills.
In some sections, the path rises above the gorge, offering fine views of the forest and the wild water cutting its way through the stone. In spring, when snow from higher elevations melts, the river becomes especially lively, showing the full force and unpredictability of nature.

Bistriški Vintgar is more than just a hiking trail. It is a place where nature and history meet in perfect balance. Along the way, there are wooden bridges, resting spots, and viewpoints from which you can observe the river and the landscape around it. At the end of the route stands a mountain lodge, an ideal place to rest and enjoy a simple meal before heading back.
The best time to visit is spring or early summer, when the vegetation is lush and the water levels are high. The walk is not difficult, but because of the damp and rocky terrain, sturdy footwear and some caution are recommended.
Although less famous than the Vintgar Gorge, the Bistriški Vintgar near Slovenska Bistrica offers an equally memorable experience. It’s the peace, fresh air, and the constant sound of water that make it a perfect escape for anyone looking to reconnect with nature at its purest. About 45 minutes from Bistrica is Black Lake, which you can find out more about here!
