The mystical Medici family fortress in the heart of Tuscany has served as a prison for 500 years

In the stone heart of Volterra, where medieval streets climb toward the sky, rises the Medici fortress (Fortezza Medicea), a fortress that has watched over the city for more than five centuries, as enigmatic and imposing as the family who built it. Today, it stands as a place with a unique story of power, politics, and transformation through time.

The history of this stronghold is inseparably tied to Lorenzo de’ Medici, known as Lorenzo the Magnificent, the man who shaped Renaissance Florence yet ruthlessly defended its interests. In 1472, Volterra rebelled against Florentine rule over the rights to profitable alum mines. The rebellion was brutally suppressed as Lorenzo sent his army, and the city was looted and burned. To prevent any future uprisings, he ordered the construction of a new fortress, a permanent reminder of Medici power and the fate of those who dared to oppose it.

The new structure, with its massive towers and thick walls, dominated the landscape. Its position was strategic; from the top, one could oversee the entire Volterra area, and any sign of rebellion could be quickly crushed. Over the following centuries, the fortress remained a symbol of Florentine control, and later, when the Medici became Grand Dukes of Tuscany, it served as a military stronghold and prison. Changes in power did not alter its purpose; it remained a place of authority and later of confinement.

Today, the Medici fortress still retains its commanding presence, though in a completely different form. The fortress functions as an active prison, whose main purpose is now the rehabilitation and social reintegration of inmates. Within its walls, various programs encourage responsibility and growth; prisoners participate in workshops, art courses, and social interaction programs with the public under carefully supervised conditions.

A particularly fascinating aspect of the fortress is its restaurant, open only on selected evenings, where inmates prepare and serve dinner to guests. This extraordinary experience, set within the stone walls of what was once a symbol of repression, now represents another side of power, the human one, striving for redemption and a new beginning. Because of its uniqueness, dinners are booked weeks in advance, and visitors often highlight the warmth and professionalism of the staff who are rebuilding their lives one day at a time.

Although most of the fortress remains closed to the public, one of its towers, Mastio, is open for visits. From its walls, visitors can enjoy a view over all of Volterra and the Tuscan countryside, which for centuries has witnessed the struggle between power and freedom.

Like Volterra, other Tuscan cities bear the mark of the Medici architecture of power. Similar fortresses were built or restored in Sansepolcro, Florence (Fortezza da Basso and Forte di Belvedere), Livorno, and Portoferraio on Elba, all part of a network of stone guardians that protected the borders of the duchy. Yet that is a story for another time..
