Explore Kranj Ossuary and uncover the secrets of ancient slovenian burial ground

In our recent visit to Kranj on the occasion of the Vinska pot event, we had the opportunity to walk around the city and find some interesting things that we want to share with you.

This charming city, in addition to boasting its intriguing and rich history, also hides ancient secrets that have been found through the excavation of artifacts.

So if you head towards Kranj, in the very center of the city, right next to the church of St. Cantianus, you can visit the Ossuary.

Church of St. Cantianus was originally built in the second half of the 6th century when Kranj served as a fortress for the Germanic army. Later, in the 7th century, a cemetery was built around the church.

After many years, in the 13th century, due to the increasing number of deaths and limited space, an ossuary was built on the north side of the church where the bones discovered during additional excavations were buried. This addition solved the demand for burial space of the Slavic people and was used until the 18th century.

Along with bones, excavations conducted at the site have unearthed various objects, including Venetian ducats, jewelry, and a variety of tools and knives that were buried with the deceased. The artifacts, which you can see at the Gorenjski museum, provide valuable insights into the customs and material culture of the people who lived and were laid to rest here.

The ticket price is 3 euros per person, and you can obtain the key to the ossuary from the kind and knowledgeable lady working at the museum. She not only provides access but also shares insights and secrets, enhancing your experience as you explore this historical site.
