Saint John fortress is the guardian of the Kotor bay with 1300 steps

Above the bay that cuts deep into the Montenegrin coast like a fjord, rising over the winding streets of old Kotor, stands the fortress of San Giovanni or St. John. Perched at 280 meters above sea level, it dominates both the town and the sea, serving as the natural and historical crown of one of the most beautiful Mediterranean destinations.

Its foundations reach back to the time of the Illyrians, but it gained its recognizable form over the centuries when the Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans ruled Kotor. A particularly significant period of expansion began with the arrival of the Venetians in the 15th century. That was when an impressive defensive complex of walls was systematically built, stretching for as much as four and a half kilometers, encircling the town and climbing all the way up to the top of San Giovanni Hill. In some places, the walls are up to 20 meters thick, and the entire fortification system stands as a testament to Kotor’s strategic importance as a commercial and maritime center.

For centuries, the fortress was the scene of many sieges and battles. The Ottomans tried to conquer it several times, and its defensive strength was tested in conflicts between the Venetians and other powers. However, the hardest blows did not come from armies but from nature itself. Devastating earthquakes in the 16th and 17th centuries damaged parts of the fortress, but it was always rebuilt, remaining a symbol of the city’s endurance and resilience.

Within the walls lie a series of points of interest. The Chapel of Our Lady of Health, built in the 16th century halfway up the climb, is surrounded by military quarters, guard posts, and passages that once swarmed with soldiers and sentries. Today, they are silent witnesses of the past, carved in stone as reminders of turbulent times.
