Why is the Neretva the most important river in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia?

In the heart of the Dinaric Alps, beneath Mount Jabuka at an elevation of more than a thousand meters above sea level, a river is born that has shaped landscapes and the destinies of people for centuries: the Neretva. Its 230-kilometer course, 208 of which flow through Bosnia and Herzegovina and 22 through Croatia, makes it the fourth largest river flowing into the Adriatic Sea. From its source to its mouth in Ploče, the Neretva connects two worlds: the rugged, mountainous, and the gentle Mediterranean. Its distinctive emerald color has long found its place in songs, legends, and memories.

The upper course of the Neretva is wild and cold, bound by rocks and dense forests. Through Konjic and Jablanica, the river forces its way through narrow canyons, leaving behind scenes where nature dominates over human hands. In Jablanica, during the Second World War, the Battle of the Neretva took place, an event that entered collective memory and was later celebrated in both literature and film. Here, the Neretva was not just a river but a stage where life and death were decided.

In its middle course, the river becomes the central artery of Herzegovina. Mostar, a city whose name comes from the guardians of the bridge across the Neretva, has lived in its rhythm for centuries. The Old Bridge, built in the 16th century, connected not only the banks but also cultures, religions, and peoples. Its destruction in 1993 was experienced as a wound that surpassed the boundaries of a single city, while its reconstruction and return to the UNESCO World Heritage List became a symbol of hope and reconciliation.

The Neretva basin covers more than ten thousand square kilometers. On it stand the Jablanica, Grabovica, Salakovac, and Mostar hydroelectric power plants, which provide Bosnia and Herzegovina with a significant share of electricity. Yet beyond its energy importance, the river carries exceptional natural value. Among its tributaries are the Rama, Buna, Bregava, and Trebižat, each with its own beauty. The Buna, known for one of the strongest springs in Europe, and the Trebižat, with its chain of waterfalls, add to the richness of the river system.

In its lower course, the Neretva changes character. Here it widens, slows, and turns into a valley before forming a delta that covers about 20,000 hectares. The Neretva Delta is one of the most important wetlands of the Mediterranean and is protected under the Ramsar Convention. For centuries, it was a granary and orchard, and today it is best known for mandarins that, in autumn, color the landscape in orange tones. Fields, vineyards, and a network of canals testify to the perseverance of people who for centuries tamed the river while at the same time living in harmony with it. Traditional boats, which still glide along the quiet backwaters, are part of the delta’s identity and an increasingly popular tourist attraction.

In addition to agriculture, the delta is also a natural reserve. Numerous migratory birds, fish, and wetland plants find their refuge here. The Neretva is therefore also a place where man and nature meet, where it is clear how connected they are and how much one depends on the other. In that very connection lies its greatest value.

For Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Neretva is a source of energy, a historical symbol, and a space of natural wonders. For Croatia, it is a gateway to the sea, a fertile plain, and an ecological jewel. And for the entire region, the Neretva remains a story of a river that is both boundary and bridge, a river that carries memories and the future, a river that is life.
