Komovi Mountains are truly one of the most impressive mountain massifs in Montenegro

In the very southeast of Montenegro, almost on the border with Albania, there is a stunning mountain range, a true hidden gem for nature lovers and adventurers. Offering a stunning combination of alpine landscapes, untouched wilderness, and rich biological diversity, Komovi are a real haven for mountaineers, climbers, and photographers who want to explore the natural beauty of Montenegro.

Surrounded by the Prokletije on one side and the rivers Lim and Tara on the other, the Komovi mountain massif stretches approximately 40 kilometers in length and 30 kilometers in width. Its peaks, the highest Kukački Kom (2487 m), Ljevoriječki Kom (2469 m) and Vasojevički Kom (2460 m), seem to be reaching heavens from numerous plateaus and pastures.

Although bare at their peaks, the Komovi are blanketed in lush vegetation in their foothills, boasting beech, fir, and pine forests, as well as meadows and pastures that sprawl across the regions of Štavna, Ljuban, Roham Carina, and Varda. This diversity fosters a rich environment for plant life to thrive.

Astounding many with its natural beauty, Komovi hide katuns – groups of shepherd’s houses, churches such as the Church of St. Elijah in Carina, and the church built by King Nikola, the monastery of St. George, authentic mountain houses, and the occasional mountain goat and wild horse.

To make things even more interesting, and to bring the charm of katun back to life, the Eko katun Štavna complex was built, which consists of 10 houses for rent and a restaurant where visitors, hikers, and nature lovers can enjoy home-cooked meals.

This magnificent mountain massif has been declared the Komovi Nature Park since 2015, encompassing parts of Podgorica and the municipalities of Andrijevica and Kolašin. It covers a total of 13,232 hectares.
