The most colorful mosque in Europe is located in Travnik! Here’s why it’s special..

In the heart of Travnik, among the narrow streets of the lower čaršija and the murmur of the Lašva River, stands one of the most beautiful symbols of oriental art in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Ornamented Mosque, also known as the Colorful mosque or Sulejmanija. This masterpiece of Ottoman architecture enchants not only the faithful but every traveler who pauses before its walls, painted like a canvas where faith, aesthetics, and tradition have intertwined for centuries.

The story of the Ornamented Mosque begins in the 16th century when Travnik was an important Ottoman center. The original structure was severely damaged in a great fire in 1815, but was soon rebuilt, gaining its present appearance, the distinctive richness of ornamentation for which it is famous today. The artists who decorated it used vivid colors, floral and geometric motifs, and Arabic calligraphy, turning every wall into a unique work of art.

Exterior

The mosque’s façade is adorned with floral ornaments, often featuring stylized trees, vines, and flower motifs, and the decoration extends around the windows, arches, and façade. This colorful surface makes the entire building appear like a painted composition, lively and dynamic, which is why it is one of the most photographed landmarks of the city.

An interesting detail is that the mosque’s minaret is located on the left side of the building, which is unusual in typical Islamic architecture. There is no definitive explanation for this, but local stories suggest that the ground on the right side was damp and unstable, so the builders placed the minaret on the left to avoid foundation problems.

Below the mosque, on the ground floor, there used to be small shops connected to the vakuf, and the income from these shops helped maintain the mosque. Thus, the Ornamented Mosque was both a spiritual and economic center of the lower čaršija, linking faith with the rhythm of everyday life in Travnik.

Interior

The interior of the mosque is characterized by magnificent wooden ceilings with decorative panels, galleries, and columns. The decorative fields and motifs in warm tones make the space almost magical, while the light that enters through the windows changes the hues throughout the day, creating the impression of a living, breathing space.

Above the mihrab, arches, and windows are panels adorned with Arabic inscriptions and ornaments, while the gallery above the main prayer area rests on slender wooden columns that give the space a sense of lightness and warmth. Everything exudes craftsmanship, patience, and a love for detail, making it impossible to separate architecture from art.
