Preza Castle was a strategic point in medieval Albania

Near the capital city, approximately fifteen kilometers northwest of Tirana, on a hill above the settlement of Preza, stands Preza Castle. Built in the late Middle Ages on an exceptionally favorable position, it had a clear strategic role, as it enabled control over the broad plain between Tirana and Krujë, an area through which important traffic and military routes of central Albania passed.

The construction of the castle is most commonly dated to the 14th or 15th century and is linked in historical sources to the feudal Topia family, one of the most influential dynasties of medieval Albania. During this period, the castle was part of a wider network of fortifications that served to defend and control territory in conditions of frequent political change and increasing Ottoman pressure. After the Ottoman conquest, the castle was incorporated into the Ottoman military system and retained its defensive function for some time, although its strategic importance gradually declined.

The fortress was built of local stone and has a typical late medieval fortification layout. The walls enclose an inner courtyard, while towers positioned at the corners served for observation and defense. Such an organization of space allowed effective control of the surrounding area and a rapid response in the event of an attack. In the 19th century, a clock tower was added to the castle, representing a later architectural layer and reflecting changes in the use and management of the site during the Ottoman period.

In some sources, the possibility is mentioned that the fortress may have originated in antiquity, but there is no confirmed evidence for such claims, nor are they cited in relevant historical literature on Preza Castle. Existing research and available records indicate that the present structure of the castle belongs to the late medieval period, without a confirmed continuity with ancient fortifications.

Today, Preza Castle is protected as a cultural monument and recognized as a valuable example of fortification heritage near the capital of Albania. It has been partially restored and adapted for contemporary use, while the original structure of the castle has been largely preserved and remains clearly legible. Within the walls, there is also a bar and the Kalaja e Prezës restaurant, arranged within the castle complex and known for its view over the surrounding plain. Due to its location and historical significance, the site is used as a tourist destination and occasionally as a venue for cultural events.

Preza Castle represents an important historical site of central Albania, whose value is based on its defensive function, architectural features, and role within the medieval and Ottoman history of the region.
