There is not much information about its origin. Still, it is believed that the Tabor castle was built in the 12th century, in a period when conflicts and political instability were common in this part of Europe and when the nobility of Laško rose. Its construction had primarily a military function, and it was part of a complex network of fortifications whose purpose was to protect the local population and defend against frequent attacks.

Due to the favorable geographical and economic position of Laško, the castle quickly became a target of the Habsburgs, so it belonged to them and their family branches for several centuries. The castle was given to various counts and barons as a place to rest, so it soon began to fall into disrepair.
A little later, when the counts of Celje arrived in this area, the Tabor castle got a new purpose, that of a hunting lodge, because they moved all their offices and needs to the foot of the town.

The construction of such fortifications was crucial for maintaining security and stability, and the castle became a strategic point for controlling the Savinja River valley and defending the nearby town of Laško. At the height of its power, Tabor had not only military functions but was also the center of political power, where important decisions for the region were made.
Like many other medieval castles in Slovenia, Tabor also served as a shelter in difficult times, especially during the Ottoman invasions in the 15th and 16th centuries, and it was during these invasions that it got its current name.

After the Turkish army left this area, Tabor castle belonged to wealthy citizens and slowly began to lose its function and gradually decay. Several centuries later, in 1980 to be precise, it acquired a new function. Pivovara Laško completely renovated it at its own expense and restored life within its walls.
The premises of the castle today serve as a must-visit restaurant, but also for celebrations such as conferences or weddings. Restaurant Pavus also has a Michelin star.
