Everything you need to know before visiting Lake Komani!
Komani Lake is one of the most distinctive places in Albania and is definitely worth adding to your travel plans if you are heading to the north of the country. Within a relatively small area, you can see a typical landscape of the Albanian Alps, with large elevation differences, steep slopes, and deep canyons that literally descend into the water. That is exactly why many people compare this lake to fjords.

BASIC INFORMATION ABOUT THE LAKE
Komani Lake is not a natural lake, but an artificial reservoir created by the construction of a dam on the Drin River. It is surrounded by forested hills, high cliffs, and narrow gorges, and in some parts the lake narrows to only about 50 meters wide. In addition to the Drin, the Shala and Valbona rivers also flow into the lake. Because of this terrain, sailing through the lake feels like passing through a series of natural canyons.
THE BEST WAY TO EXPERIENCE KOMANI
The most popular way to explore the lake is by boat between Koman and Fierza. The journey takes just under three hours and is considered one of the most beautiful trips in Albania. It is not just transport, but an experience, as the landscape constantly changes while you pass through narrow and wider sections of the lake.
If you do not have time for the full route, there are also shorter tours that last a few hours. These often include lunch and swimming, and prices are usually lower if you book online rather than paying on site.

WHAT ELSE YOU CAN SEE IN THE AREA
In addition to the boat ride itself, it is worth exploring the surrounding areas. The Shala River stands out in particular because of its clear water and natural surroundings, and along the lake there are smaller villages, caves and hidden parts of the shore that are not as developed for tourism. This is a good choice if you want to combine light exploring, swimming, and spending time in nature.
WHEN TO GO AND WHAT TO EXPECT
The best time to visit is from spring to early autumn, when weather conditions are stable, and the water is warm enough for swimming. It is worth keeping in mind that the infrastructure around the lake is still simple, which is part of its charm, but also something to be prepared for.

WHY IT IS WORTH VISITING
Komani Lake is not a classic tourist destination with lots of facilities. Its value lies in the nature and the experience it offers. If you are looking for something different from standard beaches and cities, this is one of those places that will stay in your memory precisely because it is simple and authentic.
No, this is not Thailand! The beautiful Shala river canyon has become a big sensation!
