From Osum to Gjipe! You have to experience these five canyons in Albania!
Canyons have always stirred the imagination of travelers. They are deep valleys carved by rivers over thousands of years, leaving behind dramatic landscapes where nature reveals itself in its rawest and most beautiful form. While some people associate canyons with the famous sights of the Grand Canyon in Arizona or the Tara River gorge in Montenegro, Albania holds its own gems that surprise everyone who visits them. These rocky gorges are not only geological wonders but also places where wild nature, crystal clear rivers, and hidden spots for adventure intertwine.

The most famous among them is the Osum Canyon near the town of Çorovoda. It is often called the Grand Canyon of Albania, and the reason is obvious. Stretching for more than 25 kilometers, with cliffs up to 80 meters high, it leaves visitors breathless. The Osum River, which shaped it, offers unforgettable experiences. In spring and autumn, when it swells, rafting through its narrow passages is possible, while in summer the water reveals hidden beaches and caves accessible only to those who dare to sail or swim through its course.
A little further north, near the well-known Benjë thermal springs, lies the Lengarica Canyon. It winds through narrow passages and cliffs that in some places almost meet above visitors’ heads. It is special for its natural hot springs that form pools along the edges of the canyon, where the blend of adventure and relaxation turns into a unique experience. Walking through the cold river and then warming up in hot water in the middle of untouched nature is a memory that lasts.

In the north of the country, in the heart of Valbona National Park, lies the Valbona Canyon. Unlike others, it resembles more a fairytale gorge than a classic canyon. The Valbona River, with its turquoise tones, cuts through a valley surrounded by the high peaks of the Albanian Alps, creating one of the most picturesque landscapes in the country. Hikers and nature lovers come here for the scenery that feels unreal.
In central Albania, near the town of Gramsh, lies the Holta Canyon. It was formed by the Holtë River, which carved its way through limestone rocks, leaving behind a narrow passage of high cliffs and hidden caves. The canyon is also renowned for its hiking trails that run along the river, and the beauty of its rocky walls is especially striking in the late afternoon when the sun casts golden shades on the stone.

In the south, on the very Adriatic coast between Dhërmi and Vuno, lies one of the most unusual canyons, the Gjipe Canyon. It is approximately 800 meters long, in some places barely ten meters wide, and it culminates in a hidden beach surrounded by high cliffs. It can be reached only on foot or by boat from the sea, which further enhances the impression of discovering a secret place. Here, sea and rocks merge into a landscape that looks like a scene from an adventure movie.

Through its canyons, Albania reveals a face that often escapes the traveler’s eye. These are not only natural phenomena but also an invitation to explore, to touch untouched wilderness, and to escape the usual routes. Each of them carries its own story, and together they create a mosaic of natural wonders that make this country even more attractive and worth discovering.
