First time in Montenegro? These 10 places cannot be skipped..
Montenegro offers exceptional diversity within a relatively small area. The coast, lakes, mountains, historic towns, and modern urban centres are all reachable within a few hours’ drive. If you are visiting for the first time, you will quickly realise that there are too many recommendations and that different guides often lead you in completely different directions. That is exactly why we created this list. It focuses on specific places that are easy to access and that for most visitors, represent the key points of a first trip through this beautiful country.
FROM TIVAT TO HERCEG NOVI
This stretch covers the entire bay area of the Bay of Kotor and is experienced as a single, continuous whole. A narrow coastline, steep mountains descending directly into the sea, and a continuous chain of settlements make this route the most recognisable coastal landscape in the country. The road connects the marina in Tivat with the entrance to the bay near Herceg Novi and passes ports, historic town centres, and densely built coastal areas, without the need to separate individual locations.

LOVĆEN
Lovćen is one of the key reference points in Montenegro’s history and geography. On Jezerski Peak stands the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš, reached by a winding mountain road from the direction of the Bay of Kotor and Cetinje. This route also represents the shortest and most striking connection between the coast and the interior of the country.

BUDVA
Budva is the most developed tourist destination in Montenegro. Its walled old town, urban beaches, and high concentration of accommodation facilities and services make it the main centre of mass tourism on the Montenegrin coast.

SVETI STEFAN
Sveti Stefan is a long-standing symbol and the most recognisable visual icon of Montenegrin tourism. The former fishing village on a small islet was transformed into a luxury resort, but the complex has been closed to guests in recent years. Despite numerous announcements about reopening and public appeals, it is currently unknown if or when Sveti Stefan will be accessible to tourists again. Today, the site is mostly visited as a viewpoint from the coastal road above, overlooking the islet and the surrounding beaches.

BAR
Old Bar is one of the largest archaeological sites in Montenegro. The abandoned old town, located beneath Mount Rumija, contains remains of fortifications, churches, palaces, and residential buildings from several historical periods. The modern city of Bar developed along the coast a few kilometres away.
